I always thought the rugs were so that just by looking down, they would a familiar safe spot to retreat to while onstage, if needed. Kind of like a place to go for a mental timeout.

Now, if I just knew when the first show was where they used the magic carpets, I could seriously drive my wife crazy.

Maybe so, but also provides physical relief to ankles, knees, hips, etc. If you have ever had a job where you had to stand in one spot for hours on end, then you know that some kind of mat/carpet/padding is absolutely necessary.
